Recovery of stolen laptop with “Back to my Mac”.
May 14, 2008

Yahoo news is reporting that Kait Duplaga helped police recover over $5000 worth of goods stolen from her apartment. The Apple store employee installed a piece of software called “Back to My Mac“. This application uses the Mac’s built in iSight Camera to help identify the perpitrator. A few days after the burglary, a friend of Kait had noticed her computer was online. Kait was called at work where she immediately logged into her computer remotely with the “software”.
Doing this she was able to see the the person in question “Ian Frias” was using her Mac Laptop.
“Ian had attended a party at Kait apartment 2 weeks earlier.”
Kait immediately snapped a photo of Ian with the Macs built in iSight camera. With this information she was able to give police the name and picture of the person involved with the burglary.
After reading this article I have decided to check out the above software along with a few alternatives. Macs are a bit expensive and paying $49 for a piece of software that could potentially save your Mac and Data is worth the price.
