Fring makes it way to the iphone.
May 4, 2008

A few months back my friend Stephen Hogan mentioned a service called Fring. Fring for those of you who are unaware, gives mobile phone users the ability to use services such as Skype. (MSN, Google Talk, ICQ, Twitter, Yahoo and AIM).
Stephen had installed Fring on his Nokia E61 and was making phone calls via his wifi enabled device. I had hoped soon after the iPhone SDK was released. A company such as Skype would have developed an application to run on the iPhone.
Fring had beaten Skype to the punch by releasing the Fring mobile application (iPhone pre-release). This application works with wifi only (EDGE is currently not supported.) I had the pleasure to test this application out over this past weekend. It definitely put a smile on my face. We (iPhone users) now have the ability to use an application that brings VOIP to our super high tech phones. Truly harnessing the potential of this device.
I had placed a few calls using my Skype Out account and was able to hear everyone clear as a bell. Having a few issues with latency (delays in receiving audio). I am able to overlook this due to my excitement. Definitely give this one a try!
Here is a step by step tutorial on how to install this software.
FYI: Your iPhone needs to be Jailbroken.
