Google Chrome (Security Flaw)
September 3, 2008
As reported in ReadWriteWeb

Google Chrome has been reported to have a Serious Security Flaw. Unsuspecting users could be easily tricked into triggering a time bomb.
“The problem here is that, after a user double-clicks the download at the bottom of the screen, this application opened without any warning, which would allow a malicious hacker to easily execute any Java program on a user’s machine. ~ ReadWriteWeb
This application tricks the user to click “OK” with a bit of Social Engineering. Lets hope that Google patches this security flaw pronto. I would recommend keeping away from Google Chrome for a little while. Just because it is stamped Google. Does not mean it is safe. Give it some time. Let it be tested.
Just because your friends are doing it. Does that mean you have to. ~mom
The Zfone Project
September 1, 2008
I communicate with friends, family, and co-workers mostly through instant messenger and VoIP clients. I already know that many instant messaging services are extremely insecure in the ways they transmit your conversations over the internet. I decided to try and find some software to help keep things a little more private. After going down a few rabbit trails I had come across Zfone.

Zfone is a fairly new secure VoIP phone software that allows users to make encrypted phone calls over the internet. The principle designer of Zfone is Phil Zimmermann, the creator of PGP, the most widely used email encryption software in the world. Zfone uses a new protocol called ZRTP, this protocol has a better archiecture then any other protocol currently used to secure VoIP. ~ zfoneproject.com
Installation is relatively simple. Once installed, launch the Zfone client. Then launch any one of the IM/VoIP Clients supported by Zfone. It is really that simple.
Zfone needs two users running the software simultaneously. I have tested this software with 4four1ones using Apple’s iChat. We both agree it is the easiest way we know to encrypt your audio and video chat sessions, when using iChat.
Thanks Zfone!
VMware Fusion 2.0b2 and OS X Server 10.5
August 24, 2008
I had the opportunity tonight to tinker with VMware Fusion for the Mac. I decided to try Beta 2.0b2 and fire it up on my iMac (Core 2 Duo). I have had the itch to install my copy of OS X 10.5 Server. So thats what I decided to do.
What a way to spend a Saturday night!

Installation was extremely simple. I had allocated 1GB of Ram to my virtual machine along with 50GB of Hard Disk space. Simple enough! Things went smooth. Smoother then any Windows Installation on VMware Fusion I have ever experienced. This is a good thing!

Wishing I owned a MacPro! The Possibilities! (Do more with Less!!)
I would never run OS X 10.5 Server in a production environment with my current configuration. I can see this solution saving a boat load of money for a small business with the need to run multiple servers in one location. You can easily consolidate 3 MacPros into 1 machine. Run 3 virtual OS X Servers on lets say a MacPro with 16GB of memory. That would definitely do the job for a small to medium size business. (In my opinion..)

I still need to do a bit more testing. If this is what we are to expect from VMware. I like it!

July 23, 2008
Webcam Lighting Tip:
Are your frustrated with your current webcam? Do you have an older webcam? Are you having current issues with your webcam in regards to its brightness? Do you have trouble maintaining a decent image in low lighting? Before you throw out your webcam and replace it with a new one, due to desperation for better video images, try the following tip.

For Windows Users
- open a notepad document: start>programs>accessories>notepad
- maximize the window so that it covers your desktop (notice that my desktop is brown which does not
help brighten my image, so we are going to completely cover my desktop with the blank notepad page.
- increase the brightness on your monitor
For Mac Users
- open text editor: go>applications >textedit
- maximize the window so that it covers your desktop
- increase the brightness on your monitor

The white light reflected back onto your face and body will help illuminate those shadows that ruin your video. Hoooray - victory is yours! Now get out there and start streaming with your webcam.
Enjoy!

Selecting The Appropriate UPS Backup - Proactive Protection
July 6, 2008
We prepare for many things in life - dangerous weather, home security, life insurance, etc. It seems that one area in particular, that takes a back seat is our personal computers. With so many pieces of our life being digital: photos, videos, documents, etc., it is very important to have your pc on a UPS backup. A UPS backup allows you to finish your tasks and safely shut down your computer during bad weather or power surges in order to protect your data and your computer hardware/components. I have suffered through too many damaged computers/peripherals/corrupted files due to power surges caused by bad weather, power surges and crumby surge protectors. Always back up your data and always have your PC on a UPS backup.
Purchasing the correct UPS can be a daunting task. Blindly picking any UPS power supply at your local computer store will do you no good, if you do not take into consideration the power loads exerted on the UPS by your PC setup. Well the good news is that you no longer have to worry about purchasing an inadequate UPS. One of the leaders in UPS backup devices, APC, has a very helpful web page that helps you determine what appropriate UPS solution exists for your computer/peripheral setup. After filling out this very simple form you will be served several different APC UPS products that protect your computer from surges and present you with battery run times after a power loss, while taking into consideration your PC power load. Just know that an adequate power supply can cost a pretty penny, but when you consider the alternative, lost data or a damaged computer, it doesn’t seem so bad.
Here is what the page looks like:
